    Dr. Lucy Morgan, first chapter president; charter member of National SOPHE
    The birth of our chapter, the fouth chapter to be designated by SOPHE, Inc. (Sept. 1964)
    1975Acquired 501 (C) (6) status through Internal Revenue Service
    John Key, President, was responsible for application
    First chapter to acquire this IRS designation.
    1980The NC Board of Registry for Health Education, Inc. was established under the auspices of NC SOPHE
    Pat Garton, Jeanne Palmer, Beverley Blue and others served on the committee to develop dylaws, registration process, etc.
    First credentialing process established for health educators in the country, the precursor to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (1988).
    1985Contract for Secretarial ServiceLong-Range Planning Committee members Barbara Hager, Julie McQueen and othersFirst chapter to contract out for secretarial support services on long-term basis.
    1986Hosted the SOPHE Midyear Conference at UNC, Chapel HillPlanning Committee: Ruth Richards (past president of SOPHE), Harriet Barr , Emily Tyler, Leonard Dawson & othersThe North Carolina Chapter was the third chapter to host the Midyear Conference. All the profit was returned to SOPHE.
    1986NCSOPHE Job BankJeanne Palmer was visionary for this; Julie McQueen was first Job Bank chair.First chapter to provide listing of vacant health education positions throughout the state, made available free-of-charge to callers.
    1990Chapter offered first CECH for CHES (Continuing Education Contact Hours) at our Midyear Meeting, April 2-3, 1990Denise Teachey Houghton, CE Committee Chair, did the paperwork. Emily Tyler was a committee member.One of the first chapters to offer CECH after SOPHE was designated Multiple Event Provider by NCHEC.
    1991Health Educators' Day (later changed to Health Educators , Week)Committee members Emily Tyler, Dennis Joyner and Holly Martin developed a resolution for proclamation to be signed by the governor.First recognition of health educators in NC (and nationally) establishing a specific time to honor the health education discipline.
    1994Hosted the SOPHE Midyear Conference in Research Triangle ParkCoordinators included Emily Tyler, Leonard Dawson, and Harriet BarrNCSOPHE was the first chapter to host the SOPHE Midyear Meeting twice; received 10% of profit.
    1995Mentoring Project
    Sonya Reid, creator and coordinatorNew members are paired with experienced members to build future chapter leaders.
